What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

When a cavity develops and damages the top layer of a tooth – the enamel – a dental filling is required to keep the decay from spreading and putting other healthy teeth at risk. At Castle Rock Smiles, we provide two options for fillings: composite resin and amalgam.
With composite resin fillings, the material is color-matched to your child’s enamel so that it blends in once it successfully hardens into place. This creates a more natural-looking restoration. However, with amalgam fillings, the silver material can be required depending on the location of the tooth and the extent of the damage. It is rare for our team to choose the latter, but it is available should it be necessary.
The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

When preparing to treat your child’s cavity-stricken tooth, we will begin by prepping it. This means we will remove any damaged or decays parts to ensure it is clean and free of any harmful bacteria. Once we are finished, we will give the tooth a thorough rinse before applying a specialized acid to the enamel so that the filling material effectively bonds with the tooth.
Once the tooth is completely dry, Dr. Benzley will apply the resin or amalgam to the tooth to ensure it fills the hole. If it’s a composite filling your child receives, a curing light will be used to harden it into place.
A final polishing will occur after he checks your child’s bite to make sure it is even and comfortable. This will allow them to leave our office with a fully restored, healthier smile.
The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

No matter which type of filling your child receives at our dental office, you can expect the results to fix their decayed teeth so that they function normally moving forward. Other additional benefits your child can expect include:
- A more natural-looking appearance thanks to the composite resin that is used that blends in with their existing enamel.
- A durable restoration that offers optimal protection against future reinfection and damage.
- The ability to preserve their natural tooth, ensuring it works correctly and remains healthy, thus minimizing the potential for a dental crown or tooth extraction in the future.
- An affordable option for parents who plan to use dental insurance to pay for treatment, as most companies agree to cover a portion of the total cost.
