If your child has an upcoming appointment to have a tooth extracted, it’s natural for them to feel daunted. No one looks forward to sitting in the dentist’s chair to have their pearly white pulled especially at a young age. Many patients worry that it will be overly painful or that they won’t be able to sit still for the entire procedure if they feel squeamish. If you’re looking for ways to help your kid cope, keep reading to learn 4 tips to overcome their fear!

Tip #1: Ask Questions

People tend to fear the unknown so it may help to ask the pediatric dentist questions so you know what to expect and can walk your child through the process. Most dentists are more than happy to explain procedures in detail, so feel free to inquire about sedation, how they plan to remove the tooth, and how long it takes to recover. Having a comprehensive idea about what will happen during their procedure can give your little loved one the confidence they need to feel secure about moving forward.

Tip #2: Prepare in Advance

Some children suffering from anxiety over dental appointments do better if they have a chance to see the office ahead of time. It’s perfectly acceptable to take some time to visit before their scheduled extraction date so they can meet the staff and become accustomed to the environment. That way it won’t feel as unfamiliar when they arrive on the big day.

Tip #3: Bring Headphones

Many dentists provide music for overly anxious patients, but your child might be more comfortable bringing their own headphones or earbuds. They can listen to their favorite playlist or movie soundtrack or even enjoy an age-appropriate audiobook. Letting them close their eyes to focus on listening rather than on the dentist might be just what they need to make it through the procedure.

Tip #4: Breathe Mindfully

Did you know that deep breathing has a biologically soothing effect? It can lower your heart rate and blood pressure and relax your muscles to put you at ease. Why not teach your child a mindful technique before their extraction? Tell them to try breathing into their belly for 4 counts, holding their breath for 4 counts, then slowly exhaling for 4 counts. This deliberate box-breathing can soothe their frayed nerves throughout their visit.

Fortunately, tooth extractions don’t usually take long so they only have to stick with it for a little while. Soon they’ll be back in your care and on their way home for some well-deserved rest and recovery!
